The final turnout in Sunday's elections to the Mejlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan amounted to 91.12% of voters, the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan reports.
91.74% voted in Akhal velayat (region), 91.49% in Balkan velayat, 90.94% in Dashoguz velayat, 91.17% in Lebap velayat, 90.87% in Mary velayat and Ashgabat - 90.91% of voters.
Voting ended at 2,602 polling stations throughout the country.
According to the Electoral Code of Turkmenistan, the Central Election Commission, no later than on the seventh day after the elections, sums up the results of the elections, draws up a protocol and announces the results of the elections.
A citizen of Turkmenistan who has reached the age of 25 and has been permanently residing in Turkmenistan for the previous ten years may be elected as a deputy of the Mejlis. The Majlis consists of 125 deputies elected for 5 years on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage, by secret ballot in districts with an approximately equal number of voters. There are 258 candidates nominated by groups of citizens and three political parties of the country - the Democratic Party, the Agrarian Party and the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs - for 125 seats in parliament.
In September 2021, a bicameral parliament was created in Turkmenistan. In January of this year, the country returned to a unicameral parliament - the Mejlis.
Early elections of the new composition of the Turkmen Parliament were held in accordance with the new Constitution of the country, which was adopted after the early elections of the President of Turkmenistan in 2022.
