For 30 years of fruitful work of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, the northern part of the sea has been restored, said Sulton Rakhimzoda, chairman of the IFAS executive committee, Sputnik reports.
With such information, he spoke in Dushanbe at the conference "Central Asia: on the way to a sustainable future through a strong regional institution."
Positive results were achieved by increasing the skip from 350 cps to 700.
"The volume of water increased from 15 to 27 cubic km. The increase was almost 73%. The level of mineralization also decreased by 26%," the speaker cited the statistical data.
As Rakhimzoda noted, all this made it possible to improve the ecological situation in the Aral Sea basin.
He added that protected water areas have been created as part of the reforestation program. In addition, more than 70% of the original fish biodiversity has been restored.
Earlier, the Syrdarya and Amudarya rivers were threatened with a new shallowing.
This became known from the corresponding forecast in the decree of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Uzbek President instructed the relevant departments to increase the efficiency of water use in the face of low water expected this summer.
It is noted that excessive water consumption in the Amu Darya and Syr Darya has led to a shortage of water resources in their lower reaches, in particular, the drying up of the Aral Sea.
