During the first half of 2023, 89,493 women left Tajikistan, with many of them heading for labor migration, while others awaited their husbands returning from Russia, stated Hilolbi Kurbonzoda, the head of the Committee on Women and Family Affairs under the government of Tajikistan, during a press conference, Avesta reports.
"This significant number cannot go unnoticed. Comparing it with the same period last year, when 57,451 women migrated, it becomes evident that this figure has increased," she noted.
Kurbonzoda pointed out a significant underlying reason for this trend: many women experience difficulties and inconveniences due to the prolonged absence of their husbands, who are forced to work in Russia.
"Extended family separation places psychological and social pressure on women, and they are increasingly deciding to actively participate in the economic life by seeking work abroad alongside their husbands or later joining them," stated the committee head.
According to her, the committee, in collaboration with relevant authorities, is seeking optimal ways to support women and prevent their migration.
Hilolbi Kurbonzoda believes that if husbands returned to their families more frequently after periods of migration, the current number of women going abroad might be significantly reduced.
