Oil Extraction Grows in Tajikistan Amid Declining Gas Production and Import Reliance

Tajikistan ended 2025 with positive momentum in the oil sector, increasing crude production by 15%. This was announced by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, emphasizing that the industry is demonstrating growth despite difficulties in the gas sector, Avesta.tj reports.

According to the ministry's official data, production figures were as follows:

  • Oil: 18,546 tons were produced, 2,409 tons more than in 2024.
  • Natural gas: A sharp decline was recorded, with only 247,000 cubic meters produced, a 31.8% (115,000 cubic meters) decrease from the previous year.

Despite the growth in domestic oil production, Tajikistan remains highly dependent on external supplies to supply the transport and industrial sectors. In 2025, 1.2 million tons of petroleum products and liquefied gas were imported from the Russian Federation. This is 17.5% higher than the 2024 import volume, while the procurement plan was exceeded by 3%.

Compared to its regional neighbors, Tajikistan's energy situation appears unique. While Tajikistan relies on hydropower and fuel and lubricant imports, Kyrgyzstan demonstrates significantly higher volumes of domestic oil production.

  • Indicator (2025)........Tajikistan......................Kyrgyzstan (forecast/estimate)
  • Oil production...........18.5 thousand tons.......~180-200 thousand tons
  • Gas production.........0.247 million m³............~25-30 million m³

Thanks to the operation of fields in the Jalal-Abad and Batken regions, Kyrgyzstan produces 10 times more oil than Tajikistan. However, both countries remain critically dependent on Russian petroleum products, making energy security a shared issue for Bishkek and Dushanbe.
