Tajikistan transported a total of 120.5 million tons of cargo in 2023 to destinations using all modes of transportation, of which 114.1 million tons were transported by road (94.7%) and 6.5 million tons by rail (5.3%), Avesta reports.

This was announced by the Minister of Transport of Tajikistan, Azim Ibrohim, during a meeting of the ministry's board to review the results of the past year.

The minister stated that passenger transport amounted to 899.3 million passengers. Compared to 2022, the volume of cargo transportation increased by 16.6%, cargo turnover by 17.5%, passenger transport by 9.8%, and passenger turnover by 17.3%.

These indicators allowed increasing the share of transport in Tajikistan's GDP (130.8 billion somoni) to 10 billion 986.5 million somoni or 8.4%, which is 0.2% more than in 2022.

It is worth noting that, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's Committee on Inland Transport, the share of transport in the global GDP is 6%, in developed countries it is 4-7%, and in developing countries it is 6-15%.

In 2023, the share of domestic carriers in the freight transport market decreased by 8.6% compared to 2022, reaching 57.3%. One of the main reasons for the decrease in these indicators is the shortage of international-type waybills and consignment notes (CMR).

In this regard, the head of the Tajikistan Ministry of Transport instructed to study the procedure and current state of distribution, issuance, and use of these documents and submit a corresponding report. To determine the demand for international transportation, Minister Ibrohim instructed to identify the structure of export and import goods by country and take urgent measures to implement electronic waybills and consignment notes.

The Minister of Transport noted that during the past year, permits were provided for 39,483 vehicles, including 16.8 thousand freight and 22.6 thousand passenger vehicles, accounting for 74.1% of the total number of vehicles operating in the economy.

At the same time, the coverage of vehicle permits increased by 4.3% compared to the previous year; however, 26% (or 13,830 units) of vehicles in Tajikistan operate without permits.
