UNESCO has announced the inclusion of the rubab in the list of intangible cultural heritage of Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
The rubab, one of the oldest musical instruments in Central, South, and Southwest Asia, is played during various ceremonies, such as festivals and weddings.
According to the United Nations, the recognition of the rubab as cultural heritage of Afghanistan occurred against the backdrop of the Taliban's ban on performing and listening to music.
UNESCO reports that, over the past three years, thousands of musical instruments have been destroyed in Afghanistan by morality enforcement officials.
However, the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has denied this accusation.
