The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan has prepared amendments concerning the activities of the JSC "Kazakh Research Institute of the Caspian Sea," reports Kazpravda.kz.

Specifically, the institute's main activities will now include studying the causes and consequences of the Caspian Sea's shallowing. The document is posted on the "Open NPA" website for public discussion until September 24.

In addition, the institute monitors the environment and conducts research in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea to preserve and restore the natural resources of the Caspian Sea, and strengthens cooperation with research institutes and organizations of Caspian states.

This addition follows the directive of the President of Kazakhstan, given during his working visit to the Mangystau region on November 7, 2022.

As previously reported, the water level in the Caspian Sea has been declining since 2006, reaching a critical level in 2022. Ecologists believe that the shallowing of the world's largest enclosed body of water is linked to climate change: rising air temperatures, lack of precipitation, and reduced river inflows.

Kazakhstan's largest oil deposits have been discovered and developed in the Caspian Sea, including the major "Kashagan" field.

"Kashagan" is an oil and gas field in Kazakhstan located 80 km off the coast of Atyrau, in the northern part of the Caspian Sea.

It is one of the largest oil fields discovered in the past 40 years and the largest offshore oil field.
