A meeting of the expert group on organizing a regional electricity market for the member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO-REM) was held in Dushanbe. Discussions on the energy sector in ECO countries were initiated by Tajikistan's Ministry of Energy and Water Resources in collaboration with the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), reports Eurasiatoday.ru.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Sharifa Khudobakhsh, Tajikistan's Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources, stated:
“I am confident that today’s dialogue will not only help us achieve our goals but also maintain the sustainability and efficiency of our energy system in a rapidly changing world. Let’s use today’s meeting as an opportunity to exchange experiences, opinions, and proposals that form the foundation for the successful transformation and development of our regional electricity market.”
The event highlighted Tajikistan's vast hydropower potential, emphasizing ongoing construction of the 3,780 MW Rogun Hydropower Plant. Once fully operational, the plant will export part of its electricity production to neighboring countries in the region.
Speakers included Matthew Wittenstein, Head of the Energy Transition Division of UNESCAP, and Mamatmusa Ukubaev, a program officer for energy at the ECO Secretariat.
During the session, a draft roadmap for the ECO regional electricity market was presented.
The second meeting of the ECO-REM expert group is set to continue over two days, with representatives from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Iran participating.
