Issues related to the launch of a new power transmission line within the regional CASA-1000 electricity transmission project were discussed during negotiations between Tajikistan’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Manuchehr Safarzoda, and Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Nazgul Usenova, in Dushanbe, Avesta.tj reports.

According to the report, a 500 kV power transmission line between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic - connecting the Sugd-500 substation in Tajikistan to the Datka substation in Kyrgyzstan - will soon be put into operation.

Both sides expressed confidence that mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sector between the two countries will continue to expand and reach a new level.

The construction of the 500 kV Datka–Sugd transmission line was carried out within the framework of the CASA-1000 project.

The Central Asia – South Asia-1000 (CASA-1000) project aims to build a cross-border electricity transmission system that will supply electricity from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The official launch of the CASA-1000 construction took place in May 2016 in the city of Tursunzoda, with the participation of the heads of state and government of the four countries involved. The total budget for constructing the 1,400 km transmission line is approximately $1.2 billion.

According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Energy, the Tajik and Kyrgyz segments of the project have already been completed and are ready for integration into the regional network. The completion of the Afghan segment and the start of operations are scheduled for 2026.

As per agreements among the participating countries, for 10 years after the launch of the CASA-1000 transmission line, electricity exports from Tajikistan will be carried out exclusively during the summer months - from May to September.
