In December 2024, Tajikistan exported electricity worth over $6.4 million, which is almost 53% more than in the previous month, a report by the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan says, Asiaplus.tj reports.

Overall, in 2024, Tajikistan exported electricity worth about $113 million, which is 2.4% more compared to 2023. The share of electricity exports in the total export volume of the country in 2024 amounted to 5.8%.

According to Tajikistan's national energy company, "Barqi Tojik," during the autumn-winter season, when Tajikistan itself faces challenges with energy supply, electricity is supplied in small quantities only to Afghanistan to maintain the operation of lines and other infrastructure equipment. The agreement with Uzbekistan is exclusively for electricity supply during the summer period.

Earlier, Afghanistan's energy company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) announced that it had reached an agreement with "Barqi Tojik" to purchase electricity for the upcoming 2025. No details of the agreement were disclosed in the announcement.

The supply of Tajik electricity to Afghanistan is carried out under a general agreement signed in 2008, which will remain in effect until 2028. At the end of each calendar year, the parties sign an additional protocol specifying supply volumes and electricity prices for the following year.

Meanwhile, rural residents of Tajikistan have been receiving limited electricity since the last decade of September—3 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening.

According to statistical data, Tajikistan produced over 22.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2024, which is 2.6% more than in 2023. About 93% of the electricity last year was generated by hydropower plants.
