Tajikistan plans to complete the connection of its northern region to the Central Asian unified power grid in the first half of 2026, while the southern part of the country has already been integrated. This was announced by Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma at the 67th meeting of the CIS Electric Power Council held on November 20 in Dushanbe, Asiaplus.tj reports.

The forum brought together ministers and deputy ministers of energy from CIS member states, representatives of the Executive Committee of the CIS Electric Power Council, the CIS and the SCO, as well as experts from energy companies and research institutions. Opening the meeting, Juma noted that since 2000 Tajikistan has implemented more than 20 major energy projects worth over $2.5 billion. These efforts included the construction and modernization of substations, power transmission lines, upgrades to electrical grids at all voltage levels, and the introduction of modern metering systems.

One of the key priorities, the minister emphasized, is Tajikistan’s further integration into the regional power network. The southwest section of the national grid was connected in June 2024, and the integration of the northern region is expected to be completed in 2026.

Significant progress was also reported on the CASA-1000 project: the Tajik and Kyrgyz sections of the transmission line have already been commissioned, creating a foundation for future electricity exports.

Hydropower and renewable energy development were highlighted as strategic priorities. Construction of the Rogun HPP with a capacity of 3,780 MW is ongoing and is expected to become a cornerstone of the country’s future energy balance. By 2030, Tajikistan aims to bring the combined capacity of solar and wind power plants to at least 3,000 MW, which will help offset seasonal fluctuations in hydropower output and ensure grid stability during winter when water inflows traditionally decline.

Juma also noted strengthened cooperation with Russia through the Sangtuda-1 HPP and with Uzbekistan on the construction of two hydropower plants in the Zarafshan River basin.

The meeting participants discussed prospects for developing energy cooperation within the CIS and SCO frameworks, the progress of CASA-1000, further interconnection of Central Asian energy systems, modernization of Tajikistan’s energy infrastructure, and the draft CIS energy development strategy through 2035 with projections to 2050.
