Tajikistan and Afghanistan to Coordinate Border Security Following Surge in Incidents

During a year-end press conference for 2025, Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin announced that security forces from both Tajikistan and Afghanistan are working together to prevent escalations along their shared border, Avesta.tj reports.

Security on the Panj River

The issue has gained urgency due to a spike in armed attacks along the frontier. Minister Muhriddin stated that both sides have condemned the criminal activities of terrorist groups in border regions.

Key Security Developments:

  • Afghan Commitments: The Afghan side has pledged to take necessary measures to prevent future incidents and launch thorough investigations into recent breaches.

  • Geographical Challenges: The border stretches over 1,300 kilometers, with 1,100 km running along the Panj River and the remainder through nearly impassable mountainous terrain, complicating surveillance.

Humanitarian Support and Economic Integration

Despite security tensions, Tajikistan maintains a policy of active engagement to prevent the humanitarian isolation of its neighbor:

  • Humanitarian Aid: In 2025, Tajikistan dispatched over 6,000 tons of food and essential goods to Afghan provinces following devastating earthquakes.

  • Energy and Trade: Dushanbe continues to export electricity to Afghanistan and is systematically reopening cross-border markets to stimulate trade.

"Tajikistan welcomes any international cooperation aimed at resolving the socio-economic challenges faced by our neighbor," the Minister emphasized.
