Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the further expansion of practical and trusting cooperation. The meeting took place in Bishkek on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Avesta.tj reported.
The parties reviewed the current state and prospects of bilateral relations, focusing on politics, trade, economics, science, education, culture, and security.
The leaders emphasized the need to continue regular dialogue at the highest and highest levels, viewing it as the foundation for strengthening mutual trust and advancing joint projects.
The meeting has broader significance given India's growing interest in Central Asia. New Delhi seeks to strengthen its economic and strategic presence in the region, but faces geographic and transport constraints. For Tajikistan, India, in turn, is an important partner in diversifying external relations and expanding access to technology, investment, and new markets.
Pharmaceuticals, medicine, education, and information technology remain promising areas. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, Indian exports to Tajikistan reached $58.12 million, an increase of 27.2% year-on-year.
Transport connectivity is particularly important. Tajikistan and India are interested in developing routes through Iran, including the use of the port of Chabahar, which could expand Central Asia's access to Indian markets.
Cooperation in security remains equally important. Dushanbe and New Delhi share common challenges in terrorism, extremism, and cross-border crime.
Thus, the meeting in Bishkek demonstrates the two countries' desire to translate political trust into a more concrete economic and strategic partnership. For India, this is an opportunity to strengthen its position in Central Asia, while for Tajikistan, it offers an opportunity to expand external ties and gain additional opportunities for trade, investment, and technological development.
