The Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Tajikistan and Iran on the abolition of visas will come into force on August 10, 2024.

Based on the Memorandum, holders of general civil passports of both countries have the right to visit the territory of the other country without a visa for 90 days from the date of first entry for a period of 30 days, Asiaplus.tj reports with refrences the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan,.

This means that from the moment of first entry, citizens of Tajikistan and Iran can stay in the territory of the countries without a visa for 30 days within 90 days.

“At the first stage, the introduction of a visa-free system will be carried out only for those who use the Dushanbe-Tehran and Tehran-Dushanbe air routes,” the Tajik Foreign Ministry reports.

Earlier, the Council of Ministers of Iran signed and published a letter on the abolition of visas with Tajikistan on June 30.

The Iranian Embassy in Tajikistan stated that Iran has put forward several conditions under which the visa-free regime between the countries will begin to operate, Asiaplus.tj reports:

- duration of stay without a visa: 30 days;

- type of travel: only by air;

- route: only from Dushanbe to Tehran and back;

- condition of validity: the visa-free regime will be valid if it is observed by both sides.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported that only after the completion of the document preparation process will the date of entry into force of the visa-free regime be determined.

Now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan has officially announced the introduction of a visa-free regime with Iran.

It should be noted that the letter on the abolition of the visa regime between the countries was signed during the lifetime of the previous president of the country, Ibrahim Raisi.

However, due to the tragic incident in which Raisi died, the issue was postponed.

History of the issue
The abolition of the visa regime between Tajikistan and Iran is connected with the last visit of the late Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi to Dushanbe. In November 2023, during his visit, a memorandum on the abolition of visas was signed.

At that time, it was said that the visa-free regime would officially come into force after internal procedures. However, this process has not yet been fully completed on both sides.

After the signing of the memorandum by the presidents, the details were published on the single information and legal resource of the Ministry of Justice of Tajikistan. The document states that the purpose of the abolition of visas is to develop friendly relations.

According to the document, visa-free mutual visits by citizens of the two countries are allowed for a period of 30 days for commercial, business, tourist purposes and for the transportation of goods and passengers by drivers of any vehicles.

At the same time, the validity of the national passport must be at least 6 months.

“However, citizens of the two countries who wish to study, work or engage in journalistic activities in the other country must obtain a visa,” the document says.

The Memorandum states that the parties may, without explanation, deny visa-free entry to “undesirable persons” or terminate the residence of such persons on their territory. The parties may also fully or partially suspend the provisions of this memorandum “in order to ensure public order, national security and public health.”
