The governments of Tajikistan and Iran have signed a memorandum abolishing the visa regime for citizens of both countries during the visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Dushanbe. The document was signed in the presence of Presidents Emomali Rahmon and Ebrahim Raisi at the Palace of the Nation in Dushanbe, TASS reports.

"In the presence of the heads of states, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the abolition of visas for holders of foreign passports," the press service of the President of Tajikistan said.

Rahmon and Raisi first discussed visa regime simplification during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2023. Currently, there is regular air communication between the two countries. However, only holders of service and diplomatic passports from Tajikistan can travel to Iran without a visa, and their stay is limited to one month.

On November 8, Raisi arrived in Dushanbe for the second time. He first visited Tajikistan in September 2021, participating as an observer country in the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This was Raisi's first foreign trip as the President.
