A Tajik delegation led by Secretary of the Security Council Yusuf Rahmon held talks in Iraq with President Abdul Latif Rashid and National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji to discuss the situation and possible repatriation of Tajik citizens serving prison sentences in Iraq.
During the meetings, the sides discussed strengthening legal and human rights support for Tajik nationals, developing mechanisms for their safe and lawful return, and expanding cooperation in combating terrorism, extremism, and the financing of illegal activities, Avesta.tj reported.
According to Tajik authorities, as of late 2018, more than 450 Tajik citizens were serving prison terms in Iraq and Syria, including 36 women, Caspianpost.com reported. The delegation discussed practical measures for returning the prisoners and protecting their rights, as well as coordinating the efforts of relevant agencies in both countries.
Both sides reaffirmed their readiness to continue bilateral dialogue and enhance cooperation aimed at protecting the rights and legitimate interests of Tajik citizens abroad, as well as strengthening security and stability in the region.
