The state border line between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan is described by 94% and it is expected to open soon (three years after its closure), stated the head of Sughd region of Tajikistan, Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, at a press conference.
The commission for describing the border line between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan has been working continuously since 2022.
"As of today, 94% of the border line is fully described. We believe that everything will be resolved positively in the near future," Ahmadzoda said.
From July 21 to 24, representatives from Kyrgyzstan and the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan visited the disputed territories of Chorkuh and Vorukh. The commission is very active, and, God willing, the documents will be signed in the coming months."
Ahmadzoda did not specify where the remaining 6% of the disputed territories are located.
He also mentioned that the next meeting of the commission will take place in the city of Batken, Kyrgyzstan, from August 11 to 17.
It should be noted that after the clashes from September 14 to 17, 2021, the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan was closed.
A year after the start of the armed border conflicts between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, a meeting of the border commission and other officials from the two countries was held in the Sughd region.
From 2022 to the present day, dozens of meetings on the border issue have been held between the two countries, and several "Oshi oshti" (Reconciliation Plov) events have been organized in the Bobojon Gafurov district.
The cause of most conflicts is the uncertainty of the border between the two republics.
Closed borders between the countries result in millions of dollars in lost state revenue from customs duties and taxes, and lost income for entrepreneurs in both countries.
Transparent borders between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan allowed residents of border villages to trade with each other, exchange goods, and maintain their well-being at a good level.
This was also a partial solution to the problem of employment in rural areas, which is considered one of the pressing social issues in both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
The length of the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan is about 980 km.
According to experts, the most difficult negotiations will be related to determining the state border line in the Vorukh area, as it is a Tajik enclave within the territory of Kyrgyzstan where the most frequent disputes between the parties have occurred.
