The strengthening of the Tajik-Afghan border under the CSTO's targeted program contributes to more effective counteraction against threats along the organization's southern frontiers, stated Mahmadtoir Zokirzoda, the head of Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament, during a joint meeting of the Council and the 17th plenary session of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in Moscow, reports Sputnik-Tajikistan.
Zokirzoda noted that Tajikistan is actively combating terrorism, extremism, radicalism, drug trafficking, and other forms of transnational organized crime, paying special attention to the situation in Afghanistan.
"We expect that the practical implementation of this program will fully support enhancing the capacity of our joint efforts to counter security threats emanating from this direction," he emphasized.
The chairman of the lower house of parliament also highlighted that militants from various terrorist groups are concentrated in northeastern Afghanistan, near the CSTO's southern borders.
It should be recalled that during the November summit in Astana, CSTO member state leaders signed a program to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border. The project is divided into three phases: organization, delivery of weapons and equipment for Tajik border guards, and the full outfitting of the entire border perimeter.
