Tajikistan creates Fund to cover costs of International Year of Glacier Protection

The Government of Tajikistan has instructed to create an Organizing Committee for the implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution on the “International Year for Glacier Protection”.

The corresponding resolution adopted by the Government of Tajikistan was published on the legal information portal of the Ministry of Justice.

The Organizing Committee, which will be headed by the Prime Minister of Tajikistan Kohir Rasulzoda, will include 30 officials, Avesta reports.

The Organizing Committee is tasked with approving the Action Plan for the implementation of the fifth initiative of the President of Tajikistan and taking practical measures for its implementation within the established time frame.

As part of the Action Plan, the international conference “2025 - International Year of Glacier Protection” will be held in Dushanbe in 2025. The Organizing Committee undertakes to determine the exact date of the conference together with the relevant UN structures.

A special fund will also be created for holding international conference events, a bank account in national and foreign currencies.

“Organizational and logistical support for the organizing committee and the conference secretariat will be carried out at the expense of the conference fund, the republican budget, the contribution of ministries and departments of the republic and development partners,” the document says.

The action plan attached to the resolution contains 57 different measures.

Let us recall that on December 14, 2022, at the 77th session, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution “2025 – International Year of Glacier Protection”, presented by Tajikistan. The resolution was adopted with the support of 153 UN member countries.

Based on the adopted resolution, the following proposals received support from UN member states:

- declaration of March 21 as International Glacier Day;

- declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Protection;

- creation of an international trust fund at the UN to promote the protection of glaciers;

- holding the International Conference on Glacier Protection in Dushanbe in 2025.
