Tajikistan intends to increase its electricity generation to 375 MW, stated Sorbon Khokhukhammamadzoda, Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Energy Forum in Astana.

The implementation of joint hydropower projects in Tajikistan will enable meeting the growing demand for electricity in Uzbekistan and other countries in the region in the future, Khokhukhammamadzoda mentioned.

"SCO member states actively participate in the development of Tajikistan's hydropower potential. For example, a joint stock company has been established with Uzbekistan for the construction and operation of a hydropower plant in the Zeravshan River basin in Tajikistan. It is planned that the electricity generated at the stations will be directed to cover the growing demand in Uzbekistan in the short term and to other countries in the region in the medium and long term," the deputy minister stated.

He also noted that Tajikistan is rehabilitating its largest hydropower plants, which is expected to increase electricity generation by 375 MW.

In 2022, a virtual ceremony to launch joint construction of hydropower plants on the Zeravshan River in Tajikistan's Ayni district took place in Tashkent, attended by Presidents Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan and Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan. The project involves the construction of the Yavan HPP worth $282 million and the second HPP on the Fandarya River worth $270 million, with a total capacity of 320 MW. Both HPPs are expected to generate about 1,400 million kWh of electricity per year.
