In December 2023, Tajikistan exported electricity amounting to more than $7.2 million, which is 3.8 times higher compared to the previous month, according to the report from the Statistical Agency of Tajikistan, Asia Plus reports.

In November 2023, the export of Tajik electricity amounted to over $1.9 million.

Overall, in 2023, the supply of Tajik electricity to neighboring countries reached approximately $110.4 million, a 3.9% increase compared to 2022.

The share of electricity exports in the country's total exports last year was 4.5%.

Tajikistan had agreements for electricity supply in 2023 with only two countries – Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

At OJSC "Barki Tojik," it was noted that electricity exports to Uzbekistan occur only during the summer period, while deliveries to Afghanistan continue in the autumn-winter season but in small volumes "exclusively for the preservation of infrastructure."

The company's management claimed that during the cold season, when there is a shortage of electricity in Tajikistan itself, deliveries to Afghanistan are reduced by 10 times: from 400 MW to 40 MW.

However, statistical data analysis shows a 4.6-fold difference between summer (May-August) and autumn-winter exports: average monthly deliveries in the summer period amounted to $22.8 million, while in the autumn-winter period, they were $5 million.

According to the statistical agency, approximately 22 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were generated in the republic in 2023, a 2.2% increase compared to 2022.

About 95% of the electricity is generated by hydroelectric power stations, with the remaining portion coming from thermal power stations and small-scale solar stations.

In rural areas of Tajikistan, where about 70% of the country's population resides, electricity has been supplied in limited amounts since September 20, 2023. People in these areas receive electricity for 3 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening. Residents near the capital complain of occasional power outages lasting up to three days.
