The Minister of Transport of Tajikistan, Azim Ibrohim, during a meeting with the heads of transport companies in the country engaged in freight and passenger transportation, noted that automotive transport is considered one of the vital sectors of Tajikistan's economy. He emphasized that its continuous development contributes to the growth of other sectors of the economy, playing a key role, Avesta reports.
He also mentioned that depending on the geographical location, 93% of freight and product transportation within the country is carried out by road transport.
Referring to industry statistics, Minister Ibrohim reported that from January to November 2023, the volume of freight transportation through the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan's road transport system reached 32.655 million tons, which is 14% more than the same period in 2022. The volume of international freight transportation amounted to 2.230 million tons or 100.5% of the same period last year. International transportation was primarily conducted with China, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
From the total volume of international freight transportation, imports accounted for 1.250 million tons, while exports amounted to 980 thousand tons. Compared to the same period last year, imports increased by 22%, while exports decreased by 18%. The decline in export volume was mainly due to reduced shipments of cement and coal.
Analysis of the indicators indicates an overall growth in freight transportation volume by 14%, and the share of domestic carriers in international road transportation is increasing year by year, reaching 58% for the first 11 months of the current year.
Until 2020, this indicator ranged from 45-50%. According to the State Supervision and Regulation Service in the field of transport in Tajikistan, there are currently 228 registered enterprises and societies in the country, including 76 freight companies, 106 passenger companies, and 46 companies engaged in mixed (freight and passenger) transportation, operating under licenses.
