Tajikistan invites all representatives of UN member countries to participate in the international conference on glacier preservation, which will be held in Dushanbe in 2025, stated the First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Hokim Kholikzoda, at the Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York, reports TASS.
"I would like to invite you all to participate in the international conference on glacier preservation, which will be held in Tajikistan next year. This conference will be another contribution of our country to the implementation of SDG-13 (Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action - TASS note) and will provide a good platform for discussing issues related to climate change," he said.
Kholikzoda reminded that in 2024, a conference on water issues was already held in Dushanbe, and its results were presented at a side event at the UN headquarters as part of this forum. "As a country actively promoting climate and water issues on a global level, Tajikistan will continue to make its feasible contribution to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all - TASS note) and 13," said First Deputy Prime Minister Kholikzoda.
Tajikistan pays great attention to glacier preservation, as they provide the majority of the country's water resources. President Emomali Rahmon previously noted that over the past decades, out of 13,000 glaciers in the country, 1,000 have completely melted. In December 2022, the UN General Assembly at its 77th session supported the initiative of Tajikistan and unanimously adopted a resolution declaring 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Preservation, with a thematic conference to be held in Dushanbe that same year.
