Tajikistan's Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, presented five arguments supporting President Emomali Rahmon's statement that the country will achieve energy independence within the next 2.5 years, Asiaplus.tj reports.
In his New Year’s address to the country’s parliament, the President of Tajikistan stated that starting from May 2027, the electricity shortage in the country will be completely eliminated, and Tajikistan will achieve "absolute energy independence."
"The seasonal electricity deficit is estimated at 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours," the Tajik energy minister said during a press conference in Dushanbe on January 30.
According to him, efforts are being made in five key areas to achieve energy independence:
-
The commissioning of the third hydro unit (No. 4) at the Rogun Hydropower Plant (HPP) and an increase in the reservoir's water level will triple the capacity of the ongoing construction. Additionally, regulating water resources through the Rogun reservoir will boost the capacity of existing power plants downstream on the Vakhsh River by 400 megawatts (MW).
-
This year, the Sebzor HPP with a capacity of 11 MW will be commissioned in the Roshtkala district of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).
-
The reconstruction and modernization of the country’s largest HPP—Nurek—as well as the Kayrakkum and Sarband HPPs, will increase their total capacity by 431 MW by 2027.
-
Reducing commercial electricity losses, which will lead to more efficient energy consumption by consumers.
-
The commissioning of two solar power plants with a combined capacity of 400 MW by no later than 2027.
According to the Tajik Ministry of Energy, the country's installed electricity generation capacity is approximately 6,000 MW.
The electricity distribution company claims that rural household consumers currently receive electricity for 8–10 hours per day. However, rural residents report that they receive power much less frequently and sometimes remain without electricity for entire days.
