The Head of the International Relations Department of the Agency for Hydrometeorology under the Committee for Environmental Protection of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Komron Ruziyev, delivered a report titled "The Intensive Impact of Climate Change on Arid Regions of the Country" during COP29 in Baku. He highlighted that Tajikistan's arid regions are significantly affected by climate change, with rising average annual temperatures leading to frequent and severe droughts, adversely impacting agriculture and water availability.
Ruziyev presented his report as part of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change at the Qatar Pavilion, during a roundtable on the theme "Adaptive Technologies in Arid Regions." The event included participants from Tajikistan's Agency for Hydrometeorology under the Committee for Environmental Protection, as reported by Avesta.tj.
Ruziyev also pointed out that the rapid melting of glaciers reduces river runoff, negatively affecting energy production and irrigation systems. Furthermore, the increasing frequency and intensity of floods, landslides, and droughts pose threats to infrastructure and livelihoods.
The presentation noted that one of the arid regions of the republic is located in the southern area bordering Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. During the growing season, the Agency for Hydrometeorology provides agrometeorological bulletins to relevant ministries and agencies to support informed decision-making.
Ruziyev emphasized the Agency's need for modern technologies, such as weather forecasting models, climate modeling, early warning systems (EWS) for natural disasters, and flood and drought risk modeling. He proposed that partners could contribute to addressing these needs.
