In Dushanbe, the Government of Tajikistan and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) launched the Climate Risk Management Project. The Swiss-funded initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate change and natural disasters, Avesta.tj reports.
The project includes improving risk assessment and early warning systems, developing early response and social protection mechanisms, and introducing climate finance and agricultural insurance.
The project will be implemented with the participation of the Committee of Emergency Situations and other national partners. At the ceremony, representatives of Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan discussed further regional cooperation until 2030. Following the event, a preliminary document on joint project implementation was signed.
The project is of strategic importance for Tajikistan, as the country's mountainous economy is particularly vulnerable to floods, landslides, droughts, and other climate-related threats. Shifting from disaster response to forecasting and prevention will reduce economic losses and protect rural communities.
At the regional level, the initiative is also important for Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, which face similar risks, albeit of different scale and nature.
Coordination of early warning systems and data exchange between Central Asian countries can improve the effectiveness of responses to transboundary natural hazards. The development of insurance and climate finance, which could attract additional resources for adaptation in agriculture and infrastructure, is particularly promising.
