Tajikistan has fulfilled its international commitments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement by submitting its first biennial report on greenhouse gas emissions accounting for 1990-2022, Asiaplus.tj reports.

According to the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan, the document covers key economic sectors and provides data on carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions monitoring was conducted across five key sectors:

  • Energy: Analysis of CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O emissions.
  • Industry: Tracking of CO₂ emissions, as well as hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons.
  • Agriculture: Consideration of CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O emissions.
  • Land Use and Forestry: Monitoring of CO₂ and N₂O emissions.
  • Waste Management: Analysis of CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O emissions.

Deputy Director of the Agency for Hydrometeorology, Jamila Baydulloyeva, emphasized that greenhouse gas emissions accounting is a crucial element of Tajikistan’s environmental policy. While Tajikistan contributes only a small share of global emissions, the country remains highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. A significant glacier melt has been observed, with over 1,000 glaciers disappearing in the past 30 years.

In his address to parliament on December 28, 2024, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon stressed the importance of developing green energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By 2037, Tajikistan aims to cut its emissions by half.

The submitted climate transparency report is considered a major achievement for Tajikistan, according to the Agency for Hydrometeorology.

It demonstrates the country's commitment to international environmental standards and enables more effective strategies to reduce its carbon footprint. Such initiatives contribute to the formation of responsible environmental policies and sustainable development.
