On December 10, Tajikistan's Minister of Agriculture, Kurbon Hakimzoda, addressed the Ministerial Dialogue on Creating Water-Resilient Food Systems during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) in Dubai, Khovar reports, citing the Tajik Secretariat of the UN Conference on Water Resources.

This ministerial-level dialogue, held for the first time in the history of COP, is jointly led by the United Arab Emirates and Brazil under the overall guidance of Tajikistan. The primary objective is to strengthen the connection between food and water systems in national climate plans, framework programs, national pathways for transforming food systems, and to conserve and restore natural resources upon which these systems depend.

Ministers of agriculture and water resources from UN member states, representatives from the private sector, and international organizations participated in the event, showcasing innovative solutions in policy, finance, technology, research, and development aimed at addressing interconnected issues of food, water, and climate.

Participants gave particular attention to compiling a list of new innovative commitments from parties, various corporations, and other stakeholders focused on creating water-resilient food systems with an emphasis on local and regional solutions.

Tajikistan, actively implementing reforms to overcome challenges and threats related to climate change, has created a unified integrated system for managing water and land resources. The country is also adapting to climate change and has developed the National Climate Adaptation Strategy for the period up to 2030, the Water Sector Reform Program of Tajikistan until 2025, the Development Strategy for Tajikistan's "Green" Economy until 2037, and several other documents, as stated by the Head of Tajikistan's Ministry of Agriculture in his speech.

In this context, the minister expressed the opinion on the advisability of conducting joint multilateral research to address interconnected issues of agriculture, water, and climate crises. Tajikistan affirmed its readiness to continue efforts to develop cooperation in integrating water and food, implementing the global water and climate agenda.

Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as co-chairs of the UN Conference on Water Resources 2023 in partnership with the United Arab Emirates, are leading the Water Agenda of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, taking place from November 30 to December 12, 2023, in Dubai.
