Tajikistan imported approximately 452,000 tons of oil products in the first six months of 2023, of which 85.4% was imported from Russia, announced the Antimonopoly Agency of Tajikistan, Asiaplustj.info reports.

Now, Tajikistan will continue to receive diesel fuel at a preferential price from Russia. The restriction was introduced on September 1, 2023, due to a shortage of petroleum products for domestic use. According to the Ministry of Energy of Russia, the Russian government lifted the ban on the export of diesel fuel due to the saturation of the domestic market.

As a result of Russia's export ban on diesel fuel, Tajikistan experienced a shortage of this fuel with a simultaneous increase in prices.

Since 2013, Tajikistan has been annually receiving Russian petroleum products on preferential terms (without paying export customs duties).

The energy ministries of the two countries coordinate the volumes of domestic consumption in Tajikistan for the next year and sign an agreement on the supply of a specific quantity of Russian oil products to the republic by October 1.

In recent years, the parties consistently agreed on the supply of 830,000 tons of oil products, and for 2023, they agreed to increase this volume to 1 million tons.

According to the Ministry of Energy of Tajikistan, last year, the republic imported about 853,000 tons of oil products.

Specifically, the imports included:

  • 387,000 tons of diesel fuel;
  • 320,000 tons of gasoline;
  • 60,000 tons of jet fuel;
  • 40.6 thousand tons of petroleum coke;
  • 30,000 tons of bitumen and mazut;
  • 1.2 thousand tons of other petroleum products.
