The national electricity companies of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, Barki Tojik and Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), have extended the contract for the supply of Tajik electricity by signing an agreement for 2023. This was reported by DABS on its Twitter page on Wednesday, TASS reports.
"The contract for the supply of electricity for 2023 was signed by Alhaj Mula Muhammad Hanif Hamza, CEO of DABS, and Mohammadumar Asozoda, CEO of the National Electricity Corporation of Tajikistan," the report says. Volumes and cost of Tajik electricity are not given in it.
Electricity companies of the two countries sign such agreements every year. According to the previous contract, in 2022 Tajikistan was supposed to supply Afghanistan with 1.5 billion kWh of electricity, and Uzbekistan - 2 billion kWh of electricity. Earlier it was reported that Afghanistan pays Tajikistan for each kilowatt 3 cents for a 110 kV transmission line and 4.5 cents for a 220 kV transmission line.
Export of electricity to Afghanistan is carried out annually on the basis of existing agreements between the countries of Central Asia and Afghanistan - from Tajikistan in the period from May to September, and from Uzbekistan - from October to April.
In May 2022, it was reported that Afghanistan owed over $100 million for electricity supplied by Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The Afghan authorities explained the debt by problems with the transfer of money due to the sanctions imposed on the country, but promised to resolve the issue of paying for electricity in a short time.
