Tajikistan’s Regional Trade Turnover Reaches $1.67 Billion Amid Structural Imbalances

From January to August 2026, Tajikistan's trade turnover with the Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan) amounted to $1.67 billion, accounting for 18% of the country's total foreign trade ($9.23 billion). According to the Agency of Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, regional trade remains highly dependent on imports, which exceed exports by almost six times, Asiaplus.tj reported.

Kazakhstan remains a key trading partner in the region, accounting for more than half of interstate trade (imports from Kazakhstan exceed Tajik exports by 13 times). Uzbekistan is the main buyer of Tajik products, accounting for over two-thirds of Tajikistan's exports to Central Asian countries. Turkmenistan (4.4-fold growth) and Kyrgyzstan (2.5-fold growth) are showing strong growth, although their absolute volumes remain modest.

Tajikistan's trade statistics reflect key trends in economic integration in Central Asia. On the one hand, the sharp increase in trade volumes with Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan indicates the restoration and unblocking of logistics channels, as well as the removal of border and transit barriers.

On the other hand, a pronounced asymmetry remains. Kazakhstan serves as the main supplier of grain, food, and raw materials, while Uzbekistan is establishing itself as the main regional market for Tajik goods. The outpacing growth of imports over exports highlights the persistent shortage of production capacity in Tajikistan, but the consistent growth of trade with Tashkent (+60% over five years) and the normalization of relations with Bishkek are creating the conditions for a more diversified regional market.
