Afghanistan is prepared to join BRICS as an observer, according to Nuriddin Azizi, the Taliban government's Minister of Industry and Trade, reports TASS. Azizi confirmed that Kabul has sent an official letter to the summit organizers in Kazan, expressing the intention to participate either at this summit or the next. He emphasized that Afghanistan would like to join initially as an observer.
Previously, Russia’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, stated that Russia has decided at a high level to remove the Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations. However, he stressed that this decision must follow Russian legal procedures, requiring input from lawyers and parliamentary approval.
The Taliban has also expressed interest in joining other regional organizations. Their representative in Moscow requested Russia’s assistance for Afghanistan’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS. Afghanistan aims to transition from observer status in the SCO to full membership and has signaled its intent to eventually join the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to Jamal Nasir Garhwal, Afghanistan's chargé d'affaires in Moscow.
