The capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, moved from 171st place to 168th place in the rating of the most expensive cities in the world for the year, Nova24.uz reports.
The Economist Intelligence Unit, an analytical company of The Economist magazine, presented its annual study on the cost of living in the world. It compares prices for 200 products and services in 172 cities.
It is noted that in 2021 the rating included 173 countries, but in 2022 Kyiv had to be excluded due to the war in Ukraine.
The cheapest life, according to researchers, is in the cities of Damascus, Tripoli, Tehran, Tunisia and Tashkent. As noted in the report, this reflects the weak economies and currencies of the countries where these cities are located.
The first lines included Singapore and New York, which rose so high for the first time. Last year's leader Tel Aviv moved to third place.
The Russian cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg climbed 88th and 70th places in the rankings, moving up to 37th and 73rd places, as the authors of the report note that Western sanctions are driving up prices.
The average cost of living in the world's largest cities has increased by 8.1% over the past year in terms of local currency.
The formation of the rating was influenced by the war in Ukraine and the coronavirus pandemic. Against their background, the price of gasoline rose sharply - by 22%, as well as gas and electricity, the price of which increased by an average of 29%. In addition, the authors of the report included rising prices for food and household goods as factors.
Recall that Uzbekistan took 69th place in the UN Development Index "Electronic Government".
