President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry held a telephone conversation on Monday.

The parties discussed preparations for the upcoming COP-28 Conference in Dubai and climate issues, including the collaboration between Turkmenistan and the U.S. in reducing methane emissions and the legal framework for cooperation in this area, Turkmenportal.tm reports.

Turkmenistan considers climate change issues as one of the key aspects of its foreign policy course and respects the positions of states, including the U.S., regarding the measures taken to consolidate international efforts in this direction, positively evaluating the proposals put forward, stated Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

John Kerry expressed gratitude to the head of Turkmenistan for the work carried out in addressing such a significant contemporary issue as combating climate change and reducing methane emissions, also putting forth several proposals.

The interlocutors noted that global environmental challenges pose new tasks for states, primarily concerning the modernization of national plans and strategies, including the incorporation of modern standards for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, addressing issues of investment in renewable energy sources and developing technologies for climate change adaptation is required.

It was emphasized that Turkmenistan actively participates in the implementation of international initiatives and agreements in this field, taking concrete measures to implement relevant conventions and treaties at the national level. The signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation with UNEP by Turkmenistan on November 13 of this year became the first practical step in advancing Turkmenistan's proposal to establish a Regional Center for Climate Change-related Technologies.

During the conversation, it was highlighted that at the COP-26 Conference, Turkmenistan expressed support for the Global Methane Pledge initiative and is interested in its detailed study. In this regard, Turkmenistan's key positions on this issue were presented.

The telephone conversation took place at the initiative of the U.S. side, added the national news service.
