Turkmen-Uzbek trade turnover: plans to increase to $2 billion and more

In recent years, trade between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan has multiplied several times, exceeding $1 billion. Following talks between Turkmenistan’s National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Ashgabat this month, the two sides agreed to raise this figure to $2 billion, with prospects to increase it further to $5 billion, reports Orient.tm.

Energy remains a key area of cooperation, highlighted by the major Turkmenistan–Uzbekistan–Kazakhstan–China gas pipeline project.

Transport integration is also crucial, with both countries working to connect transport networks across Central Asia, China, Europe, and the Middle East.

Business communities in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan hold joint forums and exhibitions, fostering regional ties such as those between Lebap and Bukhara, and Dashoguz and Khorezm. Plans include opening the “Dashoguz–Shabat” border crossing and establishing a cross-border trade zone.

During the UN conference for landlocked developing countries in Avaza, a trilateral meeting was held with Berdimuhamedov, Mirziyoyev, and Azerbaijan’s Prime Minister Ali Asadov to discuss industrial cooperation and the development of transport and logistics corridors East-West and North-South, leveraging the Turkmenbashi International Sea Port.

On August 5, Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov met with Mirziyoyev, emphasizing the priority of Uzbek relations based on strong friendship and political will.

The partnership covers agriculture, electric power, oil and gas, chemical industries, and more. In 2022, both countries adopted a Trade and Industrial Cooperation Program for 2022–2025.
