Turkmenistan and Iran deepen bilateral ties

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in a phone conversation with the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, discussed the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy and logistics, the press service of the Iranian president announced.

Raisi emphasized the need to expedite the implementation of agreements reached between the countries in these areas during the recent negotiations.

He also highlighted the importance of utilizing the potential of southern Iranian ports to develop transport and logistics connections between Tehran and Ashgabat.

On his part, Berdimuhamedov stated the priority of further enhancing multi-faceted cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran. One of the key directions he mentioned was the supply of Turkmen gas to Iran and further to third countries under swap contracts.

According to the Islamic Republic, the bilateral trade volume in 2022 amounted to $500 million. Recently, agreements were signed in Ashgabat between the countries in the energy and transport sectors totaling around $1 billion.

In conclusion, both sides emphasized their interest in expanding cooperation for the long term. They agreed that a comprehensive partnership agreement for a duration of 20 years would be concluded in the near future.

A similar initiative was voiced by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in 2022 after the signing ceremony of memorandums of understanding between Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In late November 2023, the Turkmen-Iranian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation took place.

Ashgabat expressed readiness to increase the volumes of natural gas supplies to the Islamic Republic of Iran via the Korpedje-Kurtkui gas pipeline.

Agreements were reached on cooperation totaling $900 million, including road construction projects worth $550 million and an electrical transmission line with equipment supply totaling $340 million.
