Turkmenistan and Iran are planning to create joint logistics centers with Russia in the portside special economic zone (SEZ) "Lotos" in the Caspian region of the Astrakhan, head of the government of the Astrakhan region of Russia, Denis Afanasiev, told at a round table in the Federation Council of Russia on the problems of the Eurasian North-South corridor, Ritneurasia reports.
"We have received proposals from Turkmenistan and Iran on such projects. And the delegations of these countries are already choosing sites in the SEZ "Lotos" for the creation of logistics centers. They are intended for the further development of economic ties between Turkmenistan and Iran with Russia, countries of Eastern Europe and the Danube basin Including using inland waterways in the Volga and Southern federal districts of Russia, which, in turn, will increase the competitiveness of the Russian sector within the North-South corridor," Afanasiev explained.
The commissioning of the first phase of the port and logistics complex in this SEZ is scheduled for the end of next year. The main cargo port adjacent to this zone is the port of Olya. Its cargo turnover, according to Afanasiev, will increase by 3.3 million tons by 2024.
Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan also have access to the Caspian sea.
