According to a new amendment to the Agreement between the Government of Kazakhstan and the Government of Turkmenistan, permits for the transportation of goods across borders by road have been canceled, reports Kazinform, citing the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan.
The document, published on Kazakhstan’s Open Legal Acts website, states that the transportation of goods by road between the two countries or transit through their territories will be carried out without the need for permits. The amendments are currently at the stage of public hearings, which will conclude on September 5, 2024.
The governments of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan agreed to these changes "aiming to provide favorable conditions to facilitate road transport between the states." Once the protocol is adopted, it will take an additional 30 days to come into effect.
During a recent meeting between Kazakhstan's First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar and Turkmenistan's Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers Batyr Atdayev and Baimyrat Annamammedov, the current status and prospects for developing Kazakh-Turkmen trade and economic cooperation, as well as energy sector collaboration, were discussed.
Both countries are steadily expanding trade and economic cooperation across the full spectrum of interactions. Over the past five years, the volume of mutual trade between the countries has increased fourfold, with a 28% increase just in the last year. The trade turnover for the first six months of this year amounted to $237.2 million.
In November 2023, the first meeting of the Turkmen-Kazakh working group on transport, transit, and logistics was held in Ashgabat, which concluded with the signing of a Memorandum on Transport Connectivity.
