Construction has begun on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline section in northern Afghanistan, reports Oilcapital.ru.

The section will transport fuel from Turkmenistan's Galkynysh field to Herat, the third-largest city in Afghanistan.

Ashgabat announced the start of construction of the Turkmen-Afghan section of the TAPI gas export pipeline this week.

This will allow the delivery of natural gas from Turkmenistan's Galkynysh field to Afghanistan's largest province, Herat. The construction of the 150 km section will be financed by Turkmenistan.

Currently, TAPI plans to transport about 33 billion cubic meters of gas from Turkmenistan through Afghan and Pakistani cities to western India. The project is now estimated at $10 billion.

The TAPI pipeline will run from the Galkynysh gas field in southern Turkmenistan through the cities of Herat and Kandahar in Afghanistan, Quetta and Multan in Pakistan, to Fazilka in western India.
