Turkmenistan has the potential to increase its gas exports to Iran to 15-20 billion cubic meters by 2030, up from the current daily volume of about 10 million cubic meters. This prospect for enhancing gas cooperation between Ashgabat and Tehran could quadruple the current supply, Orient.tm reports.
This viewpoint was presented by Iranian energy expert Mohammad Reza to the Qudsonline publication.
"Iran can expand gas cooperation with the possibility of importing between 15 and 20 billion cubic meters of gas from Turkmenistan... In the long term, Iran should consider the possibility of participating in the development of Turkmenistan's gas fields, as China has done, to increase import capabilities and boost gas trade between the two countries," the expert stated.
Reza also noted that Turkmen gas plays an essential role in addressing the energy imbalance that Iran experiences every winter. In addition to securing mutual economic benefits, these gas supplies ensure energy security in the region.
Iran itself is evolving into a major energy transit hub, as the country not only purchases gas but also exports it to Turkey, Iraq, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
