Turkmenistan, EU discuss partnership to reduce methane emissions

The transition to the use of renewable energy sources and the reduction of methane emissions into the atmosphere have become the key topics of the joint scientific and practical conference of Turkmenistan and the European Union that opened in Ashgabat, Orient reports.

“In October of this year, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed the government of the country to establish closer cooperation with the European Union in the environmental field. The current event is one of the examples of building constructive cooperation in this direction,” EU Ambassador to Turkmenistan Diego Ruiz Alonso said at the opening of the conference.

Experts from the European Union arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the forum. They are engaged in the development of the EU policy in the field of transition to green energy. European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and Acting Director General of the European Commission, Director General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) Clira de la Torre addressed the participants with a video message.

The EU representatives emphasized that Turkmenistan has a huge potential for the development of renewable energy sources, and the country's leadership is taking responsible measures to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere in accordance with its international obligations.

During the two-day conference, specialists from sectoral ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, as well as scientific institutions, will discuss with colleagues from the European Union the introduction of renewable energy sources and ways to reduce emissions into the atmosphere through the regulation of legislation and the use of modern technologies.

On the first day of the conference, Turkmen specialists were also introduced to the policy, legislation, regional and international cooperation of the European Union in the field of green energy. The possibilities of EU investment in the development of renewable energy sources in Turkmenistan were discussed.

Also among the important topics of the conference are the prospects for the supply of environmentally friendly and low-carbon energy carriers, including hydrogen, by Turkmenistan to the European Union.
