At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, a High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Transport Cooperation, initiated by Turkmenistan, took place. The event was held as part of the Sustainable Development Week, the press service of the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
The meeting was attended by heads of international organizations, transportation ministers from various countries, and diplomatic representatives. Participants highly appreciated Turkmenistan's role in promoting the global transport agenda.
The importance of joint coordinated actions to ensure accessible and environmentally friendly transportation worldwide was highlighted, which should be the goal of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport Implementation Plan for 2026-2035.
The basis for international cooperation in this area was the resolutions of the UN General Assembly previously adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan, as well as the outcome documents of the Global Conferences in Ashgabat (2016) and Beijing (2021). Participants emphasized the need for increased multilateral dialogue to develop strategies for achieving transport sustainability.
During the meeting, issues such as attracting investment in the industry, developing multimodal systems and transportation corridors, implementing "green" technologies, and improving the accessibility of public transport were also discussed. A comprehensive report with recommendations will be prepared based on the outcome of the event.
