Turkmenistan has launched the next phase of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, the TDH news agency reported.

The ceremony was attended by the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The new section of the pipeline, titled “Arkadagyň Ak ýoly” (“The Bright Path of Arkadag”), will connect the Turkmen city of Serhetabat with the Herat province of Afghanistan. This project forms part of the major transnational TAPI initiative aimed at establishing a sustainable energy corridor linking Central and South Asia.

The TAPI pipeline is regarded as a strategic project that will strengthen regional energy security and enhance cooperation among the participating countries. The Serhetabat–Herat segment is expected to become a key link in the overall implementation of this large-scale initiative.

As noted, in September 2024, with the participation of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, several major infrastructure projects were inaugurated and launched on the Turkmen-Afghan border. Among them were the commissioning of a 177-meter steel railway bridge connecting Serhetabat and Turgundi, the start of construction of the TAPI gas pipeline and an optical fiber communication line along the Serhetabat–Herat route, as well as the opening of a logistics complex at the dry port of Turgundi station.

Additionally, construction began on the Turgundi–Sanabar section of the first phase of the Turgundi–Herat railway. As part of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan (TAP) power transmission line project, the “Nur-el-Jahad” power plant, located in Afghanistan’s Herat province, was also commissioned.

The new phase of the TAPI pipeline reaffirms Turkmenistan’s commitment to advancing international infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening energy cooperation and economic interconnectivity across the region.
