A commercial flow of natural gas was obtained at the Makhtumkuli field within the Toplum-1 contract area in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea during the drilling of a new production well, No. A8. The well reached a depth of 4,981 meters, reported Turkmenportal.com.
According to test results, its daily flow rate exceeded 1.3 million cubic meters of gas and approximately 130 tons of gas condensate. The well is still in the initial stage of development, and an increase in production is expected in the future.
The Turkmen side views the drilling results as confirmation of the field's significant hydrocarbon potential. These new findings are significant for the further development of the Turkmen Caspian shelf and the expansion of the country's production base.
The development of the Makhtumkuli field demonstrates that Turkmenistan is striving to gradually expand production not only at traditional onshore fields but also on the Caspian shelf.
This is strategically important for the country, as the majority of its gas exports currently rely on a limited number of destinations, primarily the Chinese market. Developing new reserves could increase export potential and create additional opportunities for route diversification.
In this regard, Turkmenistan is following a broader regional trend. Azerbaijan is actively developing offshore Caspian fields and using them to strengthen exports to Europe, while Kazakhstan is simultaneously increasing production at major Caspian oil projects.
Turkmenistan's advantage lies in its vast natural gas resource base, but the main challenge remains diversifying its export infrastructure. New fields alone do not guarantee export growth without additional pipeline capacity and long-term contracts.
