Turkmenistan has the opportunity to substantially increase its electricity exports to Iran. According to Iranian media, a high-level trilateral meeting was held in Tehran involving Iran’s Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi, the CEO of the national power company TAVANIR, and a member of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. During the meeting, the participants decided to explore the possibility of significantly increasing electricity imports from Turkmenistan, reports the portal atavatan-turkmenistan.com.
Currently, Iran imports around 2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually from Turkmenistan, primarily to supply its northeastern provinces, including Razavi Khorasan. However, with rising energy demand - especially during summer months - Iran faces a power deficit, making external supplies critically important.
A key factor for boosting exports will be the completion of the third power transmission line (HVTL) between Mashhad, Iran, and Mary, Turkmenistan. In May 2025, an agreement was signed to accelerate the project’s implementation. During a meeting between Iran’s Energy Minister and Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, both sides emphasized the urgent need to complete the HVTL, calling it a top priority in bilateral energy cooperation.
Once operational, the new line will not only increase the volume of power transmission but also ensure more stable and reliable regional energy supply. Experts estimate that after its launch, Turkmenistan could increase electricity exports to Iran by 1.5 to 2 times, creating a significant new revenue stream for the country’s power sector.
This move aligns with Turkmenistan’s long-term strategy to become a regional energy hub, leveraging its natural gas resources for electricity generation and exporting power to neighboring countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.
