Turkmenistan, as an active supporter of UN environmental conventions, is making confident strides toward developing renewable energy sources, reports Turkmenportal.tm.
According to Turkmenistan: Golden Age, the country is now conducting comprehensive reforms aimed at using modern and innovative technologies. Innovations in renewable energy are being put into practice.
Until recently, the country utilized small solar panel installations to provide electricity and desalinate mineralized water for local users in areas distant from central infrastructure networks. However, the situation is now undergoing a significant shift.
In the Kyzyl-Arvat district of Balkan province, a combined solar and wind power plant with a total capacity of 10 MW is being constructed. Industry experts note that using such stations and local renewable energy sources, particularly wind, will help reduce fossil fuel consumption.
In line with Turkmenistan’s Constitution, which enshrines state oversight of the rational use of natural resources and environmental protection, legislation is continually being improved. A National Climate Change Strategy, a National Renewable Energy Development Strategy until 2030, and the Laws of Turkmenistan on “Renewable Energy” and “Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency” have all been adopted.
Additionally, Turkmenistan has ratified the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. Among the promising directions within the "green" economy is the implementation of hydrogen production projects.
At the recent “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan - 2024” forum, Turkmenistan’s Minister of Energy, Annageldi Saparov, noted that the commissioning of a 10 MW solar and wind power plant marks the beginning of practical implementation of alternative energy sources in the country. A promising combined power plant project on the Caspian coast was also mentioned, which, in time, will enable an increase in electricity exports, the source notes.
