From September 6–8, Turkmenistan’s Minister of Railway Transport, Mammet Akmammedov, paid a working visit to Iran, where he held meetings with Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mehrdad Bazrpash, and Head of the Iranian Railways Authority, Jabbar-Ali Zakeri. The main focus of the talks was to enhance cooperation and boost railway transit between the two countries, Turkmenportal.com reports.

The parties discussed concrete measures to increase freight volumes and improve the efficiency of transit routes. In particular, attention was given to key regional transport corridors, including:

  • China–Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran,

  • the Ashgabat Agreement international corridor (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Oman),

  • and the Armenia–Iran–Turkmenistan–Kazakhstan transit corridor.

Both sides agreed to expand cooperation within the framework of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and to ensure the effective use of transit routes.

As part of the visit, the Turkmen delegation also reviewed the operations of the Iranian Railways Wagon Control Center and inspected the facilities of the new Aprin dry port, located near Tehran at the intersection of Iran’s East–West and North–South railway corridors. Additionally, the delegation visited the Akyayla–Incheh Borun railway border crossing on the Turkmen–Iranian border to assess progress on infrastructure development.

These talks highlight the mutual interest of Turkmenistan and Iran in enhancing the region’s transport potential and strengthening trade and economic ties.
