The UN General Assembly has unanimously adopted the resolution titled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Creating New Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Central Asia”, initiated by Tajikistan, according to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.
The proposal was first introduced by President Emomali Rahmon during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2024.
The resolution sets out the foundational principles for the ethical and safe use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the region. A central element of the document is the establishment of a Regional Artificial Intelligence Center in Dushanbe, which will coordinate joint programs among the five Central Asian countries, press service of the CIS Executive Committee reports.
The Center’s responsibilities will include training specialists, supporting AI startups, conducting scientific research, and harmonizing regulatory approaches to AI governance across the region.
The adoption of this resolution highlights Tajikistan’s growing role in shaping the global high-tech agenda. Its implementation is expected to pave the way for the development of secure and trustworthy AI systems in Central Asia, offering a model that could be replicated in other parts of the world.
The Dushanbe-based Center will also support regional cooperation in building shared data infrastructure and developing common principles for the responsible use of AI technologies.
