The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution titled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).” The draft resolution was submitted by Tajikistan, which holds the 2025 chairmanship of the CIS, the CIS Executive Committee’s press service reported.
The resolution, supported by UN member states, recognizes the CIS’s active role in strengthening regional cooperation across key areas, including trade and economic development, statistical and economic data exchange, education, healthcare, science and innovation, culture, sports, tourism, environmental protection, and disaster response.
It highlights joint efforts to counter transnational threats such as terrorism, extremism, illicit drug trafficking, organized crime, and illegal migration.
The document emphasizes that enhanced collaboration between the UN and the CIS contributes to advancing the UN’s goals and principles, including sustainable development, international peace and security, and human rights protection. UN specialized agencies and international financial institutions are encouraged to expand cooperation with CIS member states.
The adoption of the resolution marks a significant diplomatic achievement for Tajikistan and reaffirms the CIS’s status as a reliable partner of the United Nations in promoting regional stability and sustainable development.
