The UN General Assembly supported the resolution put forward by Tajikistan and unanimously adopted another initiative of President Emomali Rahmon to proclaim International Markhor Day (a type of mountain goat), Tajikistan Foreign Ministry announced.

The resolution recognizes the need to address the unprecedented global decline in biodiversity and emphasizes that the conservation of markhor and its natural habitat is an environmental imperative.

The resolution also emphasizes the importance of international and regional cooperation in markhor conservation, noting national and regional initiatives already underway. The importance of the upcoming Ninth World Conference on Mountain Ungulates, which is scheduled in Dushanbe from 12 to 15 October 2024, was taken into account.

Markhor (Capra falconeri) is one of the rare animals of the mountainous regions of Central and Northern Asia, including Tajikistan, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. They play an important role for ecosystems, biodiversity, tourism, etc., and awareness of their conservation at the global level is very important, given that this rare animal is listed in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
